2024: The Things No One Can Predict
To be honest, I have no idea what 2024 will bring. Expectations are my bane, so I’ve learned to think of externals and schedules as hopes, and leave space for the unexpected. Although, to be clear, I still cling stubbornly to my expectations and become discombobulated when I am thrown off the path I expected to be on.
In 2024 my major focus will be on getting as close to a complete draft of LADY CHAOS, Sun 3, as possible.
My second major focus: I hope to receive an edit letter asap (January, perhaps) for the mystery fantasy duology. I plan to get that turned around and into production for its (currently scheduled) 2025 publication date. More on all that later, when I know more.
My third major focus is the Cold Magic collection, due for a Summer 2024 publication by Fairwood Press. I have finished all the stories, so my job from here on out is administering the arrival of illustrations and the foreword, etc, and other production jobs like proofreading, and so on.
The plan is to have paperback copies of THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD BEGINS IN ICE in time for Glasgow WorldCon (which I am hoping to attend). The deluxe edition (which I’m hopeful will happen but which is not yet guaranteed) may be published a little later than the ebook & trade paperback editions simply because print scheduling is so complicated right now, and a hardcover edition involves some different and more time consuming processes.
Patreon: for those who are interested, I post a weekly Finn photo and a weekly written post. Forthcoming for 2024 is a planned extensive series on world building (to go with the earlier series on Revision and on Character). This sequence of posts is basically my world building workshop split into about two dozen posts. I’ll include additional posts on craft and career topics as I see fit, as well as Portals into what I’m toying with/working on. And a few more posts with photos from my Central Asia trip. Plus a surprise here and there. Maybe some flash fiction, if the mood takes me. My pristine and excellent cheesecake recipe. I don’t know!
This newsletter will remain free (and will be transferred to Buttondown). Patreon carries the bulk of my non fiction writing, while all the news and occasional sneak peaks will continue to appear on this somewhat-monthly newsletter.
As I mention above, I hope to attend Glasgow Worldcon. If any of you will be there, PLEASE hunt me down. I hope to be on programming and have at least one formal “con” signing and maybe one or two informal signings (most likely at the Fairwood Press booth, if trade paperback copies of the Cold Magic collection are available).
I include a photo of books I am determined to read in 2024. These are not the only books I will read (only one fiction book is included here, for example, and I expect to read a lot more fiction), but these are books that are on my table right now that I want to make sure to get to.
SNOOT for 2024
As always, I could not do this without you. Thank you.
